There has been an uproar in past years over colorizing black and white movies. Colorizing a still image, however, can bring about a fresh and vibrant look.

Wouldn't it be fun to see your great grandparents in full color and in their primes? Or a historic figure like Abraham Lincoln, in all his technicolor glory?

Colorizing is a combination of computer skill and of guesswork. We can't always know what color a garment was, or someone's exact skin tone. Shades of gray can only give you a clue. Colorizers work to make subjects look as natural as possible.

The process of adding color can be time-consuming, dependant on the number of subjects and the complexity of the background. The results, however, are worth the time and effort.

Below are some colorized examples from film and television's black and white era.
